Competition Warm-Up & Cool-Down

Last Updated: August 16, 2012

The purpose of a Competition Warm-up is to physically and mentally prepare the athlete to skate.  This is accomplished by increasing their range of motion, core body temperature, blood viscosity and heart rate.  The Warm-Up also helps to control stress levels and to increase level of focus prior to competing.  Based on their skating level and type of skating program (short/long), the skater will spend 25 to 35 minutes performing various drills in preparation for competing.

The main benefit of the Cool-Down, done immediately following competing, is to utilize myofascial release techniques and stretching to reduce possible lactic acid accumulation, lower heart rate and relieve any muscle tension.
