Competition Warm-Up & Cool-Down
The purpose of a Competition Warm-Up before a competitive event is to physically and mentally prepare the athlete to skate. This is accomplished by increasing their range of motion, core body temperature, blood viscosity and heart rate, while also helping to control stress levels and to increase level of focus. Based on their skating level and type of skating program (short/long), the skater will spend 25 to 35 minutes performing various drills.
The main benefit of the Cool-Down, done immediately following competing, is to utilize range of motion exercises to reduce possible lactic acid accumulation, lower heart rate and relieve any muscle tension.
