During On-Ice Power Skating Lessons, the skater will work on various drills to improve speed, increase extension and enhance flow across the ice. This is accomplished first by working on basic crossover and stroking techniques and then progressing to more skating skills drills incorporating crossovers with turns from the "Moves in the Field." The purpose of this is to assist in improving transitions and fluidity across the ice, which is necessary in the International Judging System. Through the use of various skating and timed jumping drills, skating endurance can be developed and increased.
Coaches also have a couple other options to have their athletes work on during a Power Skating Lesson. The first is to work on increasing speed into the skater's jumps where they are pushed into their jumps to understand the importance speed has on jumping as well as to overcome the fear of skating fast into a jump. Another option is to work on is skating power within the skating program, where the skater, by breaking down a skating program into sections works on increasing speed into and out of jumps through the transitional phases of the program. They will learn where to push and the affects one's pattern has on skating power in order to increase their speed and power throughout the entire program.
