Rationale Behind Utilization of the Med-Ball Squat Throw:

The Med-Ball Squat Throw is an excellent exercise to work on one’s lower body explosiveness. It is also a great exercise for teaching the athlete how to get the hips through in order to fully triple extend. Many times, athletes have difficulty finishing their hips when jumping off the ice as well as on the ice. In order to effectively do the med-ball squat throw, it requires an athlete to fully triple-extend at the point of take-off in order to explosively drive the med-ball upward towards the wall. For these reasons, I have found this exercise to be an amazing tool for teaching an athlete how to finish the hips in order to triple extend on a jump.
